Treating Hand and Wrist Pain

Hand and wrist pain is a common area of musculoskeletal presentation, affecting up to 25% of the general population at any given time. Whether caused by overuse, trauma, underlying medical conditions or osteoarthritis. Hand and wrist pain can significantly impact daily function, making simple tasks such as writing, lifting, or gripping objects uncomfortable or even impossible.

Common conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, ganglion cysts, fractures and ligament sprains. Athletes, manual workers, and office professionals are especially vulnerable due to the high demands placed on their hands and wrists.

When left untreated, hand and wrist pain can lead to persistent stiffness, muscle weakness, nerve compression and even permanent loss of function. Over time, compensation patterns may develop, leading to pain in the elbow, shoulder, or neck.

At our clinic, we understand how crucial proper hand function is to your quality of life. Our expert physiotherapists are trained in the assessment, diagnosis and targeted rehabilitation of hand and wrist conditions. Using evidence-based treatment techniques, we aim not just to relieve pain, but to restore full mobility, strength, and function, helping you return to the activities you love with confidence and comfort.

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Assessing Hand and Wrist Pain

We start with a thorough assessment to understand exactly what’s going on and how it’s affecting your life. We will ask questions identifying the pattern and behaviour of your symptoms so as to build a clear picture of your condition.

Next, your physiotherapist will do a hands-on physical examination. We’ll look at your movement, strength, flexibility, functional movements, special tests and observation. Depending on your symptoms, we may use tests, like Tinel’s or Phalen’s tests to check for nerve irritation (such as carpal tunnel syndrome), or Finkelstein’s test if we suspect tendon problems. We may also assess your grip strength and hand function to see how the pain is affecting your everyday tasks.

All of this information helps us design a personalised treatment plan that’s right for you. Whether your pain is from an injury, overuse, or a long-term condition, our goal is to get to the root of the problem and help you recover safely and fully, so you can get back to doing the things you enjoy without discomfort.

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Hand and Wrist Pain

Manual Therapy

This is hands-on treatment to improve joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and relieve pain. This may include:

  • Joint mobilisations – gentle movements of the wrist or finger joints to improve flexibility, reduce stiffness and ease discomfort.
  • Myofacial release, which loosens the connective tissues around the hand and wrist that may be limiting motion or causing pain.
  • Passive stretching to help improve the range of motion in tight or inflamed areas after injury or surgery.

Soft Tissue Release & Massage

Targeting tension in the muscles of the forearm, hand, or wrist, improves circulation and promotes healing.

Targeted Exercise Programs

Strengthening, stretching, and mobility to restore function and prevent recurrence.

Taping

To support and protect the wrist or hand during healing, or reduce strain during activity.

Neural Gliding Techniques

For nerve-related pain like carpal tunnel syndrome, to reduce irritation and improve mobility.

Education & Self-Management Strategies

Helping you understand your condition, perform activity adaption and make adjustments to daily tasks.
