Treating Back Pain

Back pain affects approximately 9.5 million people in the UK each year. In England alone, around 18.5% of adults report living with a long-term musculoskeletal condition, which includes chronic back or joint pain. If left untreated, back pain can progress to chronic discomfort, reduced mobility, and in severe cases, nerve damage. Beyond the physical impact, it often affects mental health - leading to anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. Socially and economically, untreated back pain may cause lost productivity, time off work, and a diminished quality of life due to reduced activity and social isolation. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are essential to prevent long-term complications and improve outcomes.

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Assessing Back Pain

Our assessment begins with a thorough history, where we explore the onset, nature, and impact of your pain while carefully screening for any serious underlying conditions. We consider all factors in order to get a comprehensive understanding of your condition. Typical questions may include how and when your pain started, the specific symptoms you experience, and the location of your pain.

Following this, a detailed physical examination is conducted, including posture analysis, range of movement, strength, palpation, joint mobilisation, functional movement pattern analysis and neurological assessment. This helps us pinpoint the likely source of your pain - whether it stems from nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments, or a combination of these factors.

Based on this assessment, we create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your unique needs, focusing on improving pain, restoring function, preventing of future issues and achieving your goals.

I and 3 members of my family have been treated by Rob for several years for various injuries and we cannot speak more highly of him and his colleague George. Rob has an enormous wealth of knowledge and expertise and he also uses acupuncture which we find increases our recovery.

FIONA TALBOT

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Back Pain Management

Manual Therapy

Our hands-on approach includes joint mobilisations or manipulations, soft tissue massage, and trigger point release. These techniques aim to reduce pain and stiffness while improving movement and function.

Pilates and Exercise Therapy

We incorporate targeted stretching for tight muscles such as the hamstrings and hip flexors, alongside strengthening exercises for the core, gluteal, and back muscles. Mobility exercises are designed to enhance spinal movement, and functional training, such as lifting techniques and sit-to-stand practice is often included. Additionally, we provide progressive home-based programs to support rehabilitation between sessions, optimizing recovery and long-term outcomes.

Fascial Release

This gentle, hands-on therapy targets the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles, bones, and joints - to release tension and improve tissue mobility. By enhancing fascial flexibility, we help reduce pain, restore movement, and promote the body’s natural healing processes.

Acupuncture

As a complementary treatment, acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body to encourage natural healing and pain relief. When combined with physiotherapy, it can support muscle relaxation, enhancing overall recovery.

Posture and Ergonomic Advice

We provide education on maintaining proper spinal alignment during sitting, standing, and working. This includes guidance on desk setup, lifting techniques, and sleep positions to minimize strain and prevent further injury.

Education

Understanding the cause of your pain is essential. We help you learn about your condition and how to manage it effectively, encouraging activity and correct posture to overcome fear of movement. We also suggest practical changes to help prevent recurrence and support long-term wellness.
