Treating Foot & Ankle Pain

Foot and ankle pain is a common area of musculoskeletal presentation. It can occur for a variety of reasons be it sport, occupation or activity related. Some of the common problems we treat include plantar fasciitis, achilles tendon pain, Morton’s neuroma, ankle ligament sprains, stress fractures, arthritis, bursitis, tendon pain and mechanical foot pain. We also have experience helping with less common or more complicated foot and ankle issues, so no matter what you’re facing, you’re in good hands.

If foot or ankle pain is left untreated, it can become worse over time, causing ongoing discomfort and making it harder to move. This can also affect other parts of your body, such as your knees, hips, or back as your body tries to adapt to the pain. That’s why it’s so important to get expert care early on. With the right treatment and support, you can reduce pain, regain strength and balance, and keep moving comfortably for years to come.

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Assessing Foot and Ankle Pain

We take a comprehensive and personalised approach to assessing foot and ankle pain. Your assessment begins with an in-depth conversation where we’ll ask about your medical history, lifestyle, and daily activities, as well as specific questions: When did the pain start, does it worsen with walking or running, have you had any recent injuries or changes in activity? We’ll also explore whether your pain could be linked to other areas, such as previous knee, hip, or lower back injuries, that may be affecting how you move.

Following this, we carry out a detailed physical examination. This may include range of motion testing, muscle strength assessment, gait analysis, joint mobility checks and special tests. We often perform specific tests such as the Windlass Test for plantar fasciitis, Thompson Test for Achilles tendon rupture, and anterior drawer test to assess ankle ligament stability. We may also observe how you walk or perform functional movements like squatting or balancing to identify any underlying movement patterns contributing to your pain.

Our goal is to get to the root of the problem, not just treat the symptoms. Once we’ve identified the cause, we’ll work with you to outline your personal goals, whether that’s walking without pain, returning to sport, or simply being more active. We’ll then build a tailored recovery plan to help you achieve those goals safely and effectively.

"I’ve been a full-time judo player for many years, and I’ve tried many physios, but Physio1 to 1 is by far the best. I’ve been going there for over 6 years now, and every time I get injured or need treatment, I book straight in with them. They always listen carefully to what I want to get out of the session, pinpoint the problem straight away, treat it effectively, and give me a realistic recovery plan tailored to my situation - whether that’s upcoming competitions or training camps."
